Development and simulation testing for a new approach to density dependence in species distribution models

Abstract Density dependence is included in many population–dynamics models, but few options exist within species distribution models (SDMs). One option for density-dependence SDMs proceeds by including an independent time-series of population abundance as covariate using a spatially varying coefficient (SVC). We extend this via three alternative approaches that replace the with information available SDM. recommend “intermediate complexity” approach estimates SVC responding to median each time; indicates whether given location has smaller- or greater-than-average sensitivity changes abundance. next develop reaction–advection–diffusive simulation model, wherein individuals avoid habitats exceed threshold local density. This movement model results estimated negatively correlated average spatial distribution. Finally, we show can be identified bottom trawl data four eastern Bering Sea from 1982 2019. conclude common “basin-model” animal ecological teleconnection, depletion recovery at one locations will affect resulting dynamics geographically distant habitats, and form density detected SDMs.
